Tom's Crossing

Tom's Crossing, a mash-up of Homeric epic, Old West yarn, teen adventure and ghost story manages an incredible balancing act: despite its 1200 pages and leisurely, laconic narration style, it's completely gripping and filled with tension. That it's so engaging and so readable is testament to Danielowski's skill as a writer. The underlying complexity and constant digressions sneakily deliver a love-story, a critique of capitalist destruction of the natural environment as well as a beautiful tribute to our relationship with horses.
